LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Local breweries and wineries are popping up all over Kentuckiana but there is only one Louisville meadery.
Gordon Taulbee and his business partner are the guys behind Louisville Mead Company. He was a home brewer for several years, making primarily beer.
“We liked mead but we really couldn’t get it anywhere and when we could it was more like a beer but we wanted what the Vikings drank a traditional honey wine ,” said Taulbee.
He perfected the recipe and started selling mead at farmers markets about a year ago, and it just hit local store shelves.
Taulbee says, “Having it on shelves is a shock every time we see it the cell phone comes out and we take a picture of it and send it to each other.”
The best part about this business is where it all starts, Taulbee makes his mead in his own basement. He was allowed to set up down there by Kentucky agriculture law.
“It is a very humble beginning but it’s not an uncommon beginning. I think everyone starts off with a little dream of having something of their own and you gotta start with the means that you have and this is the best way for us to do it,” said Taulbee.
You can sample and buy mead at the Douglas Loop farmers market, every Saturday from 10 until 2. It is also in select local liquor stores.
